Carole King was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1942 as Carol Klein. Carole started playing the piano at an early age and then added singing to her repertoire in high school, forming a vocal quartet called the Co-Sines in high school. A New Yorker to the quick, Carole King attended Queens College and became friends with Paul Simon, Neil Sedaka and Gerry Goffin. Carole King and Goffin quickly came together as an adept songwriting team and eventually married. Together King and Goffin worked in the famous Brill Building, where chart-topping hits were churned out during the 1950s and early 1960s. Carole King and Goffin first found success with "Will You Love Me Tomorrow." The song found the top of the Billboard charts when the Shirelles released it in 1961. Other King/Goffin hits include: Take Good Care of My Baby (Bobby Vee), The Locomotion (Little Eva), One Fine Day (The Chiffons), Pleasant Valley Sunday (The Monkees), Up on the Roof (The Drifters), Chains (The Cookies; later The Beatles), (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman (Aretha Franklin) and He Hit Me (and It Felt Like a Kiss) (The Crystals). Carole King stumbled out of the starting blocks several times while trying to get her solo career up and running. Carole King eventually divorced Goffin and married Charles Larkey of the band the Myddle Class. Eschewing her New York roots for the wilds of California, Carole King and Larkey teamed with Danny Kortchmar and formed a group called the City. The City released one album, Now That Everything's Been Said, but it garnered little attention. King then released Writer (1970which also landed DOA. Then came the album that changed everything. Carole King released her masterstroke, Tapestry in 1971 and it has since gone on the define the 70s' singer-songwriter ethos. It remains Carole King's best-known and most well received album and it remains her most popular album among fans and critics. King then issued Music (1971), Rhymes and Reasons (1972) and Wrap Around Joy (1974), which all sold well. Carole King and Gerry Goffin reunited to write Thoroughbred in 1975. It featured performances by David Crosby, Graham Nash and King's longtime friend James Taylor. Carole King then married another songwriting partner, Rick Evers, after releasing Simple Things in 1977. Sadly, he died of a heroin overdose one year later. Retiring to Idaho to collect her thoughts, King became an environmental activist after releasing a stunning collection of heartfelt tunes called Speeding Time in 1983. After another 6-year hiatus, Carole King returned to music in 1989, recording City Streets, followed by Colour of Your Dreams in 1993. Incredibly, the album featured a guest performance by Slash of Guns n' Roses. Most recently, King launched her "Living Room Tour" in 2004 and released The Living Room Tour album in 2005. Carole King released Love Makes the World: Deluxe Edition on her own label, Rockingale Records, in 2007.
