Jay Leno got his break as an opening act for Johnny Mathis and Tom Jones, which led him to a job as a writer for the series Good Times, not surprisingly, just like late-night rival David Letterman. Jay Leno made his Tonight Show debut in 1977. At the time, Leno had become famous for appearing on The Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. Show. Unbeknownst to his peers, though, Jay Leno was gaining experience in acting and he was cast in 1978's American Hot Wax. His comedic star continued to burn bright and led to several appearances on Late Night with David Letterman. In 1985, Jay Leno began guest hosting for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Then, in 1987, Jay Leno became the exclusive guest host for The Tonight Show. When, the king of late night, Johnny Carson, surprised everyone with his retirement announcement, everyone assumed that David Letterman would be picked to take the helm. Incredibly, Jay Leno was named Carson's successor. Jay Leno was honored with the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Music series in 1995. Jay Leno is also internationally renowned for his incredible car collection and is known as a serious collector and restorer of cars and motorcycles. Jay Leno even writes a car column in Popular Mechanics. In 2001, Jay Leno added families of victims of the 9/11 attacks by auctioning off a Harley-Davidson motorcycle signed by his celebrity guests. The bike sold for about $360,000. In 2005, he repeated the gesture twice: early in the year to aid victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake - the bike sold for $810,000; and later to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. That bike sold for $1,550,100. Jay Leno also writes articles for The Sunday Times of London, reviewing high-end sports cars.
