She moved to Nashville at age 18 and paid her dues by playing at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, the famous honky-tonk bar across the alley from the Ryman Auditorium. After signing to Mercury Records, she reached No. 3 with her first single, "Better Things to Do," in 1995, followed by hits like "When Boy Meets Girl," a remake of "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "Now That I Found You." After hitting No. 1 in 1998 with "Easy on the Eyes," Clark downplayed the cowgirl image, but her career momentum faltered. However, in 2003, she rebounded with the spunky hit "I Just Wanna Be Mad."
