When Billy Joel was in his twenties, he moved to Los Angeles, where he performed in piano bars until he was signed by Columbia and cut his first album, Cold Spring Harbor, in 1971. In 1973, Billy Joel released his second album, Piano Man, which rocketed up the charts on the strength of the title track, and the ballad "Captain Jack." Billy Joel followed with Streetlife Serenade, the next year, and scored a top 40 hit with "The Entertainer." It sold better then his first album. Billy Joel moved his home base from LA, back to NYC for his fourth album, Turnstiles. Amongst the standout tracks were "Miami 2017," "New York State of Mind," and "Say Goodbye to Hollywood." By the end of 1976, Billy Joel was bonnafide star. Billy Joel returned in 1977 with The Stranger, which quickly surpassed the success of his previous albums. The album went double platinum in its first year alone and produced hits such as "Vienna," "Just The Way You Are," "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant," "Only The Good Die Young," "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)," "She's Always a Woman," and the title track.
