Miley Cyrus Bio
Destiny Hope Cyrus was born in 1992, in Nashville, Tennessee. Her parents, Letitia Jean and Billy Ray, nick-named her “Smiley” as a child, which eventually turned into the “Miley” we associate with her today.
Miley’s father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was already a well-established performer when Miley was born, and so Miley Cyrus was raised in an entertainment household. When Billy Ray began shooting the television series Doc, the family moved to Toronto, Canada, and Miley was exposed to the world of television and film.
Miley decided before she was ten that she wanted to be an actress, and so she began taking classes. Her first role was on her father’s television show, and when she was eleven, she heard that the Disney Channel was seeking a girl about her age for the television series Hannah Montana. Miley decided to audition.
Miley eventually earned the lead role on the show when she was twelve. The show premiered in March of 2006 and became an instant hit, catapulting Miley Cyrus to teen superstar status. The popularity of her character encouraged Disney to package a “whole” Miley, including music, film, and consumer products.
In 2006, Miley Cyrus was ready to begin releasing music in her own name, instead of as her Hannah Montana character. Disney permitted one of the tracks on the Hannah Montana soundtrack, the song, “I Learned From You,” to be credited to Miley Cyrus as herself. The soundtrack reached number one on the charts.
Shortly after Hannah Montana’s second season launched in 2007, Miley Cyrus signed a four-album deal with Hollywood Records. Later that year, she released double-disc album, with one disc the soundtrack to Hannah Montana’s second season, and the other, Meet Miley Cyrus, functioning as Miley’s personal debut. It went triple platinum and peaked at number one on the charts.
“See You Again,” the album’s first single, became Miley Cyrus’s first top ten hit under her own name, and she followed up with the Best of Both Worlds Tour, to promote both her own career and that of her alter-ego simultaneously. The tour sold out almost instantly, bolstered by Miley’s own popularity and the popularity of her opening acts, Aly & AJ, the Jonas Brothers, and Everlife.
Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, was released in 2008. The film was a box office smash, and so Disney extended the film’s originally planned one-week run. The soundtrack peaked at number three on the charts.
In the summer of that year, Miley Cyrus released Breakout, which debuted at number one. Miley herself co-write eight of the songs on the album, and the lead single, “7 Things,” reached into the top ten on the charts.
In 2008, Miley Cyrus voiced the character of Penny for the film Bolt, and co-wrote her duet with John Travolta, “I Thought I Lost You,” for the film. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for the single.
In 2010, she starred in The Last Song, which grossed more than $80 million. Around the same time, the final season of Hannah Montana began its run on the Disney Channel. The show officially concluded in January of 2011.
Miley Cyrus continues plans for future albums and film roles. She recently published Miles to Go, an autobiography of her life thus far.
