If you've ever seen Prince perform live, you know the debt of gratitude he owes to those that came before him. Sly Stone, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell all deserve his personal thanks. With that said, Prince is also widely acknowledged as one o the true musical geniuses of modern music.

Prince was backed by The Revolution in the '80s and by The New Power Generation the following decade. Prince also worked on different occasions with famous Jazz musicians, such as Miles Davis, Larry Graham and Maceo Parker.

Prince is responsible for some of the best modern funk and soul albums, including Dirty Mind, Purple Rain and Sign of the Times, 1999 (1982), Lovesexy (1988) and The Rainbow Children (2002).

Prince's first hit Little Red Corvette featured an accompanying video that made him part of the first wave of black artists on MTV. Other hits include 1999, When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain, exhibiting both versatility and feeling.

Prince has also long been one of the industry's most respected and sought-after songwriters. Everyone from Chaka Khan and The Bangles to Tom Jones have benefited from Prince's writing gifts.

Prince directed and starred in three movies, Purple Rain (1984), Under The Cherry Moon (1987) and Graffiti Bridge (1990).

Prince was one of the first artists to sell music directly to fans via the Internet, much to the chagrin of record labels.
