Dennis Edwards ably filled the shoes of not one, but 2 soul giants. Before he was recruited to replace David Ruffin as the front man for the Temptations, Dennis Edwards was the guy the Contours turned to replace Levi Stubbs.

In 1968, Dennis Edwards took the lead microphone for the Temptations after David Ruffin left the band. A longtime friend of the Temps, Edwards's powerful vocal style quickly gelled with sound of the group. Dennis Edwards was the Temptations psychedelic funk master, appearing on such songs as "Cloud Nine," "I Can't Get Next to You," "Ball of Confusion," and "Psychedelic Shack," as well as the groundbreaking "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" and memorable "Masterpiece." Both Cloud Nine" and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" won Grammy Awards.

Dennis Edwards remained in the Temptations until being fired by the bands founder, Otis Williams, in 1977. After a brief hiatus and solo pursuits, Dennis Edwards was asked to rejoin the Temptations in 1980.

In 1982, Edwards got the chance to sing with Davis and Eddie Kendricks as part of the Temptations Reunion album and tour. Edwards also toured with his fellow ex-Temptations leads during the late-1980s as Ruffin/Kendricks/Edwards, Former Leads of The Temptations".

Dennis Edwards had a hit in 1984 with "Don't Look Any Further", a duet with Siedah Garrett. Edwards returned to the Temptations in 1987, Edwards was brought back once again, but was himself replaced by Woodson in 1989 after being fired a third and final time by Otis Williams.
