With a long a storied past, Aerosmith is the rare American rock band with virtually two disparate careers. The first 15 years of the band's existence was your stereotypical drug-fueled crash and burn story of excessive days and debaucherous nights. Then you have the Aerosmith hit-making machine that has been in operation since 1985, when the rehabilitated band met three hip-hoppers from Hollis, Queens.

Aerosmith stormed out of the Boston music scene. Three of the members, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Tom Hamilton had originally met in New Hampshire in the late 60's. Tyler was a relocated urbanite from Yonkers, New York; Perry from Hopedale, Massachusetts; and Hamilton from New London, New Hampshire. In 1970, the three decided they would form a band together. Later they met up with Joey Kramer (drums) and Brad Whitford (rhythm guitar).

Aerosmith enjoyed sold-out arenas and platinum selling albums throughout the 1970's, but they split in 1979. Drug use had addled the band to a pathetic mess. While many new fans don't know this, Jimmy Crespo replaced Joe Perry from '79 through '84.

Incredibly though, Aerosmith rose like a phoenix from the ash and Perry rejoined the fold in late 1984. Amazingly, the band resolved old differences and ultimately overcame their out-of-control addictions.

A new light shined down on Aerosmith in 1985 collaboration with Run-D.M.C. Together they created a new rock/rap version of "Walk This Way". This song also served as an early step in the process of bringing rap to white audiences.

Aerosmith enjoyed a new found popularity with an entirely new audience. That resurgence in popularity and capturing of a new fan dynamic has made Aerosmith one of top-selling and most popular rock bands in the world today.

To date, Aerosmith's biggest selling worldwide hit is "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing," from the movie Armageddon.

Aerosmith have even infiltrated Disney Theme Parks in the U.S. and other countries with their own thrill ride 'Rock 'n' Rollercoaster featuring Aerosmith'. Aerosmith also find themselves at the center of the latest pop-culture craze – appearing on the Guitar Hero "video game.
