James Taylor is what you call a songwriter's songwriter.

James Taylor was raised in North Carolina and has lived western Massachusetts for many years now. He has sold more than 40 million albums over the course of his 4-decade career, which started when he was signed to the Beatles' Apple Records in 1968. Despite the big label name, JT still hadn't found a hit and struggled as an artist.

Then came the deluge of legendary songs: "Fire and Rain," "Country Road," "Mexico," "Shower The People," "Your Smiling Face," "Carolina In My Mind," "Sweet Baby James," "Copperline" and many more. Surely, James Taylor was man of myriad musical gifts. As a singer, a writer and a performer.

James Taylor released Sweet Baby James in 1970. It went triple-platinum and gave JT his first Top 10 hit, the heartbreaking "Fire and Rain." The follow-up, Mud Slide Slim also attained platinum status. His hit and the #1 single, "You've Got a Friend," was written by long time friend and collaborator Carole King. The recording won a Grammy Award in 1971 for Best Pop Male Vocal.

Also in 1971, James Taylor cause an international sensation when he was featured on the cover of TIME magazine, who heralded him as the harbinger of 'the singer/songwriter era".

James Taylor has earned a whopping 40 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards. JT's mantle holds 5 Grammy.

James Taylor's first Greatest Hits album earned him the Recording Industry Association of America's elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. James Taylor was also given the 1998 Century Award, the highest accolade offered by Billboard magazine. James Taylor was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2000.

In February 2006, The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selected James its MUSICARES Person of the Year.

James Taylor's latest Grammy nomination came in 2007 for his album James Taylor at Christmas.
