Journey burst onto the San Francisco music scene as an offshoot of Santana. Originally, Journey featured Santana guitarist Neil Schon, bassist Ross Valory and drummer Prairie Prince. Another former Santana member, keyboard player and singer Gregg Rolie, joined Journey shortly afterwards. This lineup recorded the eponymously titled Journey in 1975. It didn't take long before the band realized they needed a powerhouse vocalist.

Steve Perry was the man for the job and was hired in 1977. Infinity was released a year later in '78 and attained platinum status within a year. 1979's Evolution followed and Departure came a year later in 1980.

The classic live album, Captured landed in 1981 Then Journey took off for the stratosphere.

Escape, placed Journey alongside pop music elite, scoring three Top Ten hit singles; "Who's Crying Now," "Don't Stop Believin'," and "Open Arms." The album since gone platinum nine times over.

Journey's Frontiers featured the hit "Separate Ways" in 1983.

After a brief hiatus, Raised on Radio was released in 1986.The group then disbanded for a second time, this time for much longer. Finally, in 1994, Journey returned with For the Love of Strange Medicine and the album went gold.

In 1996, Perry, Schon, Cain, Valory, and Steve Smith reunited, recorded and released the platinum-selling Trial by Fire.

Journey and Steve Perry gained new attention thanks to the success of American Idol and Randy Jackson, who frequently talks about his days as Journey's bassist.

In 2005, Journey received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where Perry made a surprise appearance at the ceremony. Later that year, Journey embarked on their 30th anniversary tour, giving away free promotional copies of their new studio album, Generations.

In December of 2005 Journey's hit from 1981, Don't Stop Believin', rose to #13 on the "Hot Digital Songs" chart.

Journey was nominated for two categories on VH1's Big in '05 awards show: "Big Old-School Triumph" and "Big Download" (for "Don't Stop Believin'").

In 2006, Sirius Satellite Radio named Journey's "Faithfully" the top prom song of the 1980s
