At a young age, Lindsay Lohan has already established herself as one of the few who can genuinely pull off the triple threat combination of model, actress and singer. Lindsay, born July 2, 1986, was first known for her role as both of the twin girls in the 1998 Disney remake of The Parent Trap, as an adorable, red-haired, freckle-faced 12-year-old. She also gained fame for coming out with a major breakthrough role as lead female in Mean Girls in 2004, and for releasing two successful pop music albums. She's also renowned for all the drama going on in her personal life and the media attention she's received because of it.
Lohan, born and raised in New York to a wealthy family, is the oldest of four children of parents Michael Lohan and Dina Sullivan-both former actors. As a young child model, she was featured in many magazine ads and TV commercials, including Toys "R" Us, Calvin Klein Kids, Abercrombie Kids ads, and even a Jell-O commercial with Bill Cosby.
She also played several child roles in soap operas, including a stint in 1996 as Alexandra Fowler in Another World, before landing her film debut in The Parent Trap, co-starring Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson as the twins' divorced parents. The film did very well, both at the box office and with the critics-and Lindsay Lohan was off to a great start as a young teen making a name for herself in show business. Lohan accepted a few further roles in her young teens and then after a short hiatus she starred alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in Freaky Friday in 2003, a huge commercial success for both actresses, especially Lohan.
The following year Lohan starred in both Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Mean Girls, the former of which was a huge failure with critics. However, her outstanding performance in the smart and witty Mean Girls, opposite older Canadian actress Rachel McAdams, more than made up for the shortcomings of Confessions. Mean Girls garnered huge success and acclaim, firmly establishing Lindsay as teen movie queen; a label Lindsay is now working hard to shed.
Lohan went on to successfully star in 2005's Herbie: Fully Loaded. During the filming of this movie, she also launched her music career. Lohan signed a recording contract with Casablanca Records and released her debut album, Speak in 2004, with another album the following year titled, A Little More Personal (Raw). Speak was introduced and promoted with her hit single "Rumors," and the album did extremely well, soon going platinum. Her second album didn't do quite as well, although it did go gold in early 2006.
Lindsay Lohan has endured more than her fair share of the media spotlight and public scrutiny. Much of it came from her family's publicized relationship with father Michael Lohan, who has spent considerable time in prison for charges such as fraud and assault. In addition, the media exaggerated a "catfight" between Lindsay and fellow actress and musician Hilary Duff over their mutual relationship with singer Aaron Carter.
Further scrutiny and spotlight came with a rumored romantic relationship with Bruce Willis and numerous other male celebrities; her wild nightlife partying; alleged breast enhancement; three car accidents in 2005; dramatic weight loss, causing critics to label her as anorexic; allegations of drug use; and more. Through it all-some of it true, some untrue, some partially true-Lindsay Lohan maintained that she really learned a lot and grew up. She also claimed to be enrolled in an Alcoholics Anonymous program and said she no longer felt the need to drink.
