Rick Astley Biography

The English musician and songwriter Rick Astley was born in 1966 in Lancashire, England. When Rick was still in elementary school, he began singing in the local church choir. Throughout his teenage years, he performed with a number of local bands. Eventually, his vocal talents caught the attention of a record producer who offered Astley a recording contract with RCA Records.

 

Rick Astley released his debut solo single, “Never Gonna Give You Up” in 1987, and the single shot to the top of the charts, becoming the biggest hit of the year. “Never Gonna Give You Up” reached number one worldwide, in twenty-five countries, and earned Rick Astley a BRIT Award for Best British single. The smash hit set the stage for the additional albums: Whenever You Need Somebody (1987), Hold Me in Your Arms (1988), Free (1991), and Body & Soul (1993.) Additional hit songs from Astley include: “Whenever You Need Somebody,” “When I Fall in Love,” “Together Forever,” “She Wants to Dance with Me,” “Take Me to Your Heart,” “Cry for Help,” and “Hopefully.”

 

Rick Astley took a lengthy hiatus from his music career in 1993, returning in 2001 with the album Keep it Turned On. The album Portrait followed in 2005. But in 2007 Rick Astley’s career got an unexpected full re-boot when his first hit single, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” was “rickrolled,” meaning that internet viewers clicked on a link expecting to view a different video, but were instead presented with the music video for “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Today, Rick Astley has embraced the resurgence in his popularity and is once again performing live and recording.
