Engelbert Humperdinck was born in Madras, India but raised in Leicester, England. He began playing sax when he was only eleven, and in the mid 1950’s, began his attempts to launch a career as a singer. In 1966, a fortuitous reunion between Humperdinck and his former roommate, Gordon Mills, gave some much needed life support to what had become a fledgling and stalled career. In addition to changing his name (he had been born Arnold George Dorsey), Mills also helped Humperdinck to establish a more mysterious persona.
Humperdinck burst onto the scene in 1967 with “Release Me.” The single was a smash hit, aided by Humperdinck incredible voice, style, and now enigmatic presence, which included a quick exit after every show, without meeting any fans. “There Goes My Everything” and “The Last Waltz” followed, and Engelbert Humperdinck’s career was solidified. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Engelbert had a string of singles on the Hot 100, and became most famous for the ballad “After the Lovin’.” His distinctions include numerous Grammy awards, a Golden Globe award, seventeen platinum albums, and fifty-nine gold records. He boasts the largest fan club in the world, and earned his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989.
Engelbert Humperdinck continues to perform and record still today. In 2014, he released the album Englebert Calling, a collection of duets which features contributions by such notable performers as Elton John, Neil Sedaka, Johnny Mathis, Dionne Warwick, and many others. A series of collections, titled “50,” was recently released in 2017 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Humperdinck’s debut.
