The Bangles, consisting of sisters Debbi (drums) and Vicki Peterson (bass), and singer/guitarist Susanna Hoffs, weren’t always called the Bangles. The Colors, the Bangs, and the Supersonic Bangs came long before their debut as the Bangles in 1981. The group began when Hoffs placed an ad looking for fellow musicians and the Petersons responded. Annette Zilinskas was added later, and the Bangles were born from the Los Angeles " Paisley Underground" scene. But the Bangles would exceed that label to go on to become one of the most iconic and best-selling groups of the 1980’s.
“Getting Out of Hand,” the Bangles’ first single, preceded their debut album, All Over the Place, in 1984. Shortly thereafter, Michael Steele replaced Annette Zilinskas, and in 1985 the Bangles big breakthrough, Different Light, was released. A cover of Prince’s “Manic Monday” went to number two on the charts, and “Walk Like an Egyptian” followed, rising to number one and launching meteoric sales of the album. A few years later, a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter” appeared on the Less Than Zero soundtrack and rocketed to number one. In 1988, the Bangles released Everything, another album which rose to the top of the charts on the strength of the number one single, "Eternal Flame.”
In 1989, the Bangles disbanded, but they came back together in 2000, announcing a new studio album and additional tour dates. That same year, the Bangles were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.?? The Bangles reunited to play their hit "Hazy Shade of Winter" in front of Times Square and later played "Eternal Flame" as part of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2006.
The Bangles continue to perform and record with their original lineup. Between 2008 and 2015, the group toured throughout the United States and Europe, and in 2011 they released the album Sweetheart of the Sun. The group’s latest CD, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bangles! (2017) is a comprehensive 16 track collection of their hits, live recordings, and even demos.
