Drive-By Truckers Biography
The alternative country band Drive-By Truckers was established in Athens, Georgia in 1996, by founding members Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood. In the mid 1990’s, Drive-By-Trucks began to rely on strong online presence, which helped them to gain significant momentum and maintain that momentum over the decades. By the time the band released their debut album, Gangstability, in 1998, they had already established a very strong following and had played dozens of shows for a growing fan base.
Ganstability was followed by Pizza Deliverance (1999) and Southern Rock Opera (2011), but it was the album Decoration Day that began to garner Drive by Truckers some traction, rising into the top forty on the independent charts in the United States. The album The Dirty South fared even better, reaching into the top twenty, but it was the album A Blessing and a Curse that finally brought Drive by Truckers into the mainstream, rising to number fifty on the mainstream charts in the United States.
Since that time, Drive by Truckers has charted consistently on the mainstream charts, with their most successful album to date – English Oceans – reaching into the top twenty on the mainstream charts and into the top five on the independent and rock charts. Other notable albums from Drive by Truckers include: Brighter Than Creation’s Dark (2008), The Big To-Do (2010), and Go-Go Boots (2011.) Notable singles from the band include: “Never Gonna Change,” “A Blessing and a Curse,” “A Ghost to Most,” “Your Woman Is a Livin’ Thing,” “Pauline Hawkins,” and “Made Up English Oceans.”
Drive by Truckers continues to perform and record with the current lineup of: Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, Brad Morgan, Jay Gonzalez, and Matt Patton. The band most recently released their eleventh album, American Band, in 2016, featuring the single “What It Means.”
