American songwriter and singer Kay Hanley was born Kathleen Marie Hanley in 1968. Today, Hanley is best known as the vocalist for the band Letters to Cleo, but long before her rise to prominence, Hanley grew up in Boston, counting among her childhood neighbors musicians and actors Mark and Donnie Wahlberg.
In 1990, Kay teamed up with guitarist Greg McKenna to form Letters to Cleo. The group quickly established an indie following, starting with their album Aurora Glory Alice in 1993, featuring the hits “Here & Now” and “Awake.” With Letters to Cleo, Kay Hanley went on to release Wholesale Meats and Fish (1995) and Go! (1997), before the group disbanded in 2000.
Kay Hanley then turned to a solo career, releasing her debut solo album, Cherry Marmalade, in 2002. The album paved the way for the additional solo releases The Babydoll EP (2004) and Weaponize (2008.) During this time Hanley also provided music for a number of film soundtracks—Josie and the Pussycats (2001), Sonic Heroes (2003), and Just Like Heaven (2005)—and contributed vocals to works by a number of other artists, including: James Taylor (Open Road); Agnes Chan (Forget Yourself); Lisa Loeb (Camp Lisa); The Posies (Blood/Candy); and Bowling for Soup (Fishin’ for Woos.)
Kim Hanley continues to perform and record, both as a solo artist and with Letters to Cleo; the band recently reunited in 2016. Letters to Cleo released its latest album, the EP Back to Nebraska, in 2016.
