Of Monsters and Men Biography
The Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men was established in 2010 by founding members Kristjan Pall Kristjansson, Arnar Rosenkranz Hilmarsson, Brynjar Leifsson, Regnar Dorhallson, and Nanna Bryndis Hilmarsdottir. The band’s first accomplishment in 2011 – a battle of the bands contest in their native country – was a fortuitous foreshadowing of how quickly this band would rise to become an international sensation.
Of Monsters and Men quickly earned a recording deal and entered the studio to prepare for their debut. My Head Is an Animal was the result, and it became a smash hit immediately upon its release. On the strength of the single “Little Talks,” the album rose the top of the alternative charts not just in Iceland but also in the United States and internationally. Of Monsters and Men quickly garnered the interest of Universal in the United States, signing with the label in 2011. Performances at high profile festivals such as Lollapalooza and Newport Folk Festival followed, further strengthening enthusiasm for the band in America.
Since that time, Of Monsters and Men has released the additional album Beneath the Skin, which fared just as well as its predecessor. Notable singles from Of Monsters and Men include: “Mountain Sound,” “King and Lionheart,” “Crystals,” and “Dirty Paws,” which was featured in the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The song “Silhouettes” was also featured in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and “Sinking Man” was featured in the television series The Walking Dead.
Of Monsters and Men is a band quickly on the rise and definitely one to watch in the coming years. The group recently posted to Instagram a tease for their next album, with a short message, “Album 3! Let’s do this.” The album release is expected within the coming year.
