The Dandy Warhols Biography

The Dandy Warhols, a genre-blending musical ensemble, seamlessly fuse psych-rock, shoegaze, power pop, and synth-pop with a dash of cheeky pop-art sensibility. Their ability to oscillate between cerebral reveries and satirical pop with witty precision sets them apart. Their journey began in the 1990s, where they found early success with hits like "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" from their 1997 major-label debut, "The Dandy Warhols Come Down." Another milestone came with "Bohemian Like You" from 2001's "Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia," cleverly skewering hipster culture and drawing comparisons to Brit-pop.

The band's origins trace back to 1994 when vocalist/guitarist Courtney Taylor, keyboardist Zia McCabe, guitarist Peter Holmström, and drummer Eric Hedford formed the Dandy Warhols in Portland, Oregon. Their debut album, "Dandys Rule OK?," arrived in 1995, revealing influences from bands like the Velvet Underground and Ride.

In 1997, Capitol Records signed the group, leading to their polished-sounding second album, "Dandy Warhols Come Down." It garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, especially in the U.K., where it went gold. The single "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" made waves in the U.S., reaching number 31 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

The Dandy Warhols continued their musical journey, shifting towards pop with their third album, "Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia," in 2000. The infectious "Bohemian Like You" became one of their definitive tracks, climbing the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K.

The band ventured into synth-pop for their fourth album, "Welcome to the Monkey House," in 2003. Collaborating with industry giants like Nile Rodgers and Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes, they created hits like "We Used to Be Friends." The band's prominence was further solidified by the documentary "Dig!" in 2004, which chronicled their tumultuous relationship with the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Amidst their prolific output, the Dandy Warhols embarked on an exploration of their psych-rock roots with "Odditorium or Warlords of Mars" in 2005. They contributed to soundtracks and released stand-alone tracks, maintaining their creative flow.

In 2008, "Earth to the Dandy Warhols" featured collaborations with Mark Knopfler and Mike Campbell. The band continued to contribute to tribute albums, adding to their diverse discography.

Their eighth album, "This Machine," released in 2012, showcased a more subdued side of the band but achieved significant chart success, reaching a career high on the Billboard 200 Albums chart.

In 2019, the eclectic "Why You So Crazy" commemorated the band's 25th anniversary, followed by the sprawling "Tafelmuzik Means More When You're Alone" in 2020. This extensive collection of mostly instrumental works pushed the boundaries of their creativity.

Throughout their journey, the Dandy Warhols have remained a dynamic force in the music world, unafraid to explore new genres and experiment with their sound while keeping their listeners intrigued.
