The American indie rock band The War on Drugs was established in Philadelphia in 2005 by founding members Kurt Vile and Granduciel. The duo met in 2003 and began writing music together. Within two years they had rounded out their lineup and founded The War on Drugs.
The War on Drugs released the EP, Barrel of Batteries in 2007, followed by their debut album, Wagonwheel Blues, in 2008. Both were moderately successful, but it was the album Slave Ambient that first garnered The War on Drugs some attention, rising to the top of the US Heatseekers charts and earning the band some favorable reviews.
The album Lost in the Dream, released in 2014, truly became the band’s breakthrough though; the album rose to the number twenty-six spot on the mainstream charts in the United States and into the top twenty internationally and garnering the band a recording deal with Atlantic Records. Notable singles from The War on Drugs so far include: “Red Eyes,” “Under the Pressure,” “Burning,” and “Thinking of a Place.”
The War on Drugs continues to perform and record with the current lineup of: Adam Granduciel, David Hartley, Robbie Bennett, Charlie Hall, Jon Natchez, and Anthony LaMarca. The group recently contributed to the Grateful Dead tribute album, Day of the Dead, with the cover “Touch of Grey.” After completing a 2017 tour of Europe and America, The War on Drugs will re-enter the studio to prepare for their debut album on the Atlantic label.
