American author Jodi Picoult was born in 1966 in New York. Picoult spent her childhood years growing up in Nesconset on Long Island, but moved to New Hampshire when she was thirteen. Jodi’s aspirations to become a writer were evident from her early years; she wrote her first short story at the age of five, and by the time she was in high school, she’d decided to study writing in college.
After graduating from Princeton University in 1987, Picoult began writing short stories for magazines such as Seventeen, but to earn a more steady income she earned her degree in teaching at Harvard University and began teaching middle school English. Jodi published her first book, Songs of the Humpback Whale, in 1992, and throughout the 1990’s she continued to write moderately successful books; however, it was her works written in the new millennium which truly began to make Jodi Picoult a household name.
Jodi’s 1998 novel, The Pact, became her first to become a film adaptation for the Lifetime Original Movie channel. Plain Truth (2004) and The Tenth Circle (2008) would follow, but it was the novel My Sister’s Keeper (2004) that earned Picoult significant acclaim and became a feature film starring Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin in 2009. Her 2007 novel Nineteen Minutes, about the tragic aftermath of a small community’s experience with a school shooting, became Picoult’s first novel to debut at the number one spot on the New York Times Best Seller list. Change of Heart, published in 2008, became her second novel to do so.
Jodi Picoult has so far published more than twenty novels and remains one of the era’s most successful novelists, with more than fourteen million copies of her works currently in print. Her latest novel, Leaving Time, was published in 2014.
