Canadian journalist and essayist Malcolm Gladwell was born in 1963 in England. Gladwell first rose to prominence as a staff writer at The New Yorker in the mid-1990’s, but long before that, he grew up in England and expressed an interest in writing from an early age. Malcolm frequently spent time at the University of Waterloo, where his father taught as a Professor of Mathematics, and he recalls with fondness his fascination with the massive libraries on campus.
Gladwell earned his degree in History in 1984, graduating from the University of Toronto in Canada. He then moved to Indiana where he began working as journalist, and then began writing for The Washington Post. In 1996, Gladwell was offered a position writing for The New Yorker, with a variety of subject areas to focus on initially – homelessness, engineering, and the war on drugs, to name a few. But it was his articles “The Tipping Point” and “The Coolhunt” which earned him significant attention and a million dollar advance for his first book, The Tipping Point, which further explored the issue of crime in New York from the perspective of an epidemic.
Gladwell followed The Tipping Point with the additional books – Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005); Outliers: The Story of Success (2008); and What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (2009.) All rose to become New York Times Best Sellers, and all featured extensive academic work in the areas of psychology and sociology.
Today, Malcolm Gladwell is considered one of the most influential writers of the era; Time Magazine listed him on their 100 Most Influential People in 2005. His latest book, David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants, was published in 2013.
