The American singer Eddie Holman was born in 1946 and grew up in New York. Long before Holman rose to fame as the voice behind the hit 1970’s song, “Hey There Lonely Girl,” he began studying piano and guitar when he was still in elementary school. At the young age of ten, Eddie competed at the Apollo Theater for one of their amateur nights, and quickly won over the crowd. The young boy began to receive offers to perform on stage throughout New York, but instead of jumping right into a career while still a child, his family enrolled him in a school for the arts so that he could properly hone his craft.
After graduating from college with a degree in music, Eddie Holman began to perform throughout the Philadelphia area, developing a strong “soul” voice which would eventually become the style with which he’s most frequently associated. Holman joined the Philly-based groups the Delfonics and then later the Stylistics, but embarked on his solo career in the 1970’s, to remarkable success and critical acclaim. His biggest hit, the smash hit “Hey There Lonely Girl” arrived in 1970 and set the stage for the success of the albums I Love You (1970) and A Night to Remember (1977), featuring the singles “You Make My Life Complete” and “This Will Be a Night to Remember.” Although Eddie’s popularity waned in the 1980’s, he released another album, United, in 1985.
Today, Eddie Holman continues to perform periodically with the Eddie Holman Band, and he continues to record and write on his own record label and through his own publishing company. Most recently, Eddie Holman performed on a week-long cruise for passengers headed to Alaska, and he continues to work in the Philadelphia school system to further the education of the arts.
