Evelyn Champagne King Biography

The R&B singer known as Evelyn “Champagne” King was born in 1960 in New York. Evelyn grew up in Philadelphia, though, and as a child she was largely inspired by her uncle’s stage performances, particularly by his role in Porgy and Bess. King sang frequently, and after a record company executive overheard her singing one day, she found herself with a contract and a new career path.

Evelyn Champagne King’s debut, Smooth Talk, was released in 1977 and featured the hit songs “I Don’t Know if It’s Right” and “Shame.” For the next two decades, King continued to delight audiences with additional albums such as: Music Box (1979), Call on Me (1980), I’m in Love (1981), Face to Face (1983), A Long Time Coming (A Change Is Gonna Come) (1985), Flirt (1988), The Girl Next Door (1989), and I’ll Keep a Light On (1995.) The albums spawned the additional R&B hits “I’m in Love,” “Love Come Down,” “Shake Down,” “Just for the Night,” “Your Personal Touch,” “Flirt,” and “Hold on to What You’ve Got.”

Evelyn Champagne King was quiet for the next twelve years, but recently resurfaced with Open Book (2007), her latest album release. The album spawned a top twenty hit, “The Dance,” and is an indication of additional projects to come from King. Evelyn also recently collaborated on the song “Everybody,” alongside Miguel Migs, released in 2011.
