Mariah Carey was born in Long Island, New York in 1970, and moved to New York City the day after her high school graduation, with aspirations to begin a career in music. Mariah landed a job as a backing vocalist for Brenda K. Starr, who gave her demo tape to Tommy Mottola. A record deal with Columbia Records followed immediately.
Mariah Carey’s 1990 debut album was just the beginning of a long list of hits over the next ten years. With singles like "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Can't Let Go,” "Make It Happen, “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day,” "The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe)," and “Heartbreaker” coming from albums such as Emotions (1991), Daydream (1995), Butterfly (1997), and Rainbow (1999), Mariah Carey dominated the charts for much of the 1990’s. ??
It would be another few years before Mariah Carey would return with 2005’s The Emancipation of Mimi, but by 2007 she’d also begun work on her next studio album, E=MC². In 2009, she sang “Hero” for President Obama’s Inaugural Ball, and later that same year she returned to the big screen for a critically acclaimed performance in Push.
Later in 2009, Mariah Carey released a twelfth studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Immediately the following year, Mariah Carey began a US and Canada tour, and included a few international locations as well, such as Singapore and Brazil.
Merry Christmas II You was released in 2010, and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, becoming Mariah Carey’s sixteenth Top Ten album in the US.
After a brief hiatus, Mariah Carey performed at a fundraiser for President Obama in the summer of 2012, and one month later she was announced to appear in the 2013 film The Butler, alongside actors such as Robin Williams, John Cusack, Alan Rickman, and Oprah Winfrey.
With a career that spans two decades, Mariah Carey boasts some remarkable achievements. With more than 200 million records sold, she is one of the best-selling musicians of all time. Mariah Carey has received countless Grammies, American Music Awards, World Music Awards, and Billboard Awards. The RIAA lists her as the third best-selling female artist in the United States. She ranks on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music, and she surpassed the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent at the top of the Hot 100 singles charts.
