Rush Biography
Rush, the iconic Canadian rock band, emerged in the early 1970s, blending the influences of Led Zeppelin, Cream, and King Crimson to create a powerful and bombastic sound that left an indelible mark on the music scene. Their 1976 masterpiece, "2112," epitomizes the grandeur of progressive rock, while their willingness to shift towards shorter yet equally dynamic tracks like "Tom Sawyer" and "The Spirit of Radio" solidified their place in rock history. Known for their uncompromising approach,
Rush cultivated a massive cult following while consistently selling out arenas worldwide over four decades.
The band's journey began in August 1968 in Toronto's Willowdale neighborhood, initially composed of Alex Lifeson on guitar, Jeff Jones on bass, and John Rutsey on drums. After Geddy Lee replaced Jones, and Neil Peart succeeded Rutsey, the classic
Rush lineup was born, featuring Lee on vocals, bass, and keyboards; Lifeson on guitar, and Peart on drums, maintaining stability over the years.
Rush's early days in Toronto led to the release of their first single, a cover of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away," in 1973. After forming their label, Moon Records, they released their eponymous debut album in 1974. The breakthrough came with "Working Man" making waves on Cleveland radio station WMMS, leading to a deal with Mercury Records in the U.S. Sales soared as the band embarked on a tour, and their first live album, "All the World's a Stage," captured the energy of their shows in 1976.
Relocating to the UK,
Rush recorded albums like "A Farewell to Kings" and "Hemispheres" at Rockfield Studios in Wales, leaning more into progressive rock. Their transition led to their monumental success in 1980 with "Permanent Waves," which incorporated reggae and New Wave influences.
"Moving Pictures" followed in 1981, reaching Number Three and selling over four million copies. The album signified a shift towards synthesizers and marked a turning point in their sound. Subsequent releases like "Signals" incorporated more synthesizers and even produced their only Top 40 U.S. hit, "New World Man."
Throughout the '80s, the band kept a somewhat lower profile, but their albums consistently achieved gold or platinum status. After a hiatus following 1996's "Test for Echo" due to personal tragedies in Peart's life, they returned in 2002 with "Vapor Trails," notably devoid of synthesizers.
To commemorate their 30th anniversary,
Rush released the covers EP "Feedback" in 2004 and embarked on a celebratory tour. Their dedication to music persisted with albums like "Snakes & Arrows" (2007) and "Clockwork Angels" (2012), as well as live releases like "Time Machine 2011: Live in Cleveland."
Rush's influence and legacy in the world of rock music are undeniable, marking their 40th anniversary with the R40 box set in 2014 and a tour showcasing decades of music. Their discography saw reissues, a documentary titled "Time Stand Still," and a celebration of the 40th anniversary of "2112."
Through the years,
Rush's unwavering commitment to their craft, evolving sound, and dedication to their fans have solidified their place as one of the most enduring and revered rock bands in history.
