The American rock band the Cars was established in the late 1970’s in Boston, founded by David Robinson, Greg Hawkes, Elliot Easton, Benjamin Orr, and lead singer Ric Ocasek. The band started writing music and recording in preparation for a debut album in 1977, until a local DJ took an interest in the group and invited them to play one of their demo songs on air.
The band’s performance of “Just What I Needed” garnered the attention of Elektra Records, which signed them to the label right away. The Cars’s self-titled debut album was released in 1978 and rose into the top twenty on the mainstream charts. “Just What I Needed” was released as the album’s debut single, followed by “Good Times Roll” and “My Best Friend’s Girl,” all of which were enormous hits. The auspicious beginning for the Cars set the stage for a career which has lasted well into the new millennium and firmly established the group as one of America’s classic rock bands.
Throughout the eighties, the Cars released a series of era-defining albums, including: Candy-O (1979), Panorama (1980), Shake It Up (1981), Heartbeat City (1984) and Door to Door (1987.) The albums gave audiences the additional hit singles: “Let’s Go,” “Touch and Go,” “Don’t Tell Me No,” “Shake It Up,” “Since You’re Gone,” “You Might Think,” “ Magic,” “Drive,” “Tonight She Comes,” “You Are the Girl,” and “Strap Me In.”
In 1988, the Cars disbanded, and although there were talks of a reunion or reformation, after the passing of Benjamin Orr from pancreatic cancer in 2000, Ric Ocasek stated that a future reunion would not be possible. But recently, Ocasek teamed up with Easton, Hawkes, and Todd Rundgren to form the New Cars; this new version of the group recently released the album Move Like This, in 2011, and there are rumors of additional collaborations and performances from them in the future.
