Neil Young Song List
Neil Young was born in 1945 in Canada, and began performing music while still a young man living in Canada. He moved to California in the mid-1960’s, and along with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, founded the band Buffalo Springfield in 1966. After two years, Young left the band and began a solo career, establishing himself as one of the most iconic singers of his generation. Neil Young, the debut album, was released in 1969. He shortly thereafter established the band Crazy Horse and released Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, scoring hits with the singles “Down by the River” and “Cinnamon Girl.” Crazy Horse survived until the early 1970’s, when Neil Young joined forces with Crosby, Stills, & Nash, eventually creating Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, and releasing with them the first CSNY album, Déjà vu, in 1970.
Neil Young continued to work as a solo artist, however, and released After the Gold Rush in 1970. By 1971, he’d released Harvest, his first album to go to number one, featuring one of his most successful and enduring singles, “ Heart of Gold.” Tonight’s the Night came next in 1975, followed by: Zuma (1975); American Stars ‘n Bars (1977); Comes a Time (1978); Rust Never Sleeps (1979); Everybody’s Rockin’ (1983); Life (1987), with Crazy Horse; and This Note’s for You (1988.) Neil Young’s music, both solo and alongside Crazy Horse, continued into the 1990’s, with Harvest Moon (1992), Lucky Thirteen (1993), Sleeps with Angels (1994), and Broken Arrow (1996.)
In the new millennium, Neil Young began an extensive tour in 2000 to accompany the release of the album Silver and gold. A live album, Road Rock, Vol. 1, followed, and in 2001, Young composed the single “Let’s Roll” in memory of the tragedy of September 11, 2001. A concept album, Greendale, followed in 2003, and in 2006, Neil Young was the focus of the film Neil Young: Heart of Gold, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival that same year.
Neil Young has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and he ranks on the Top 100 Artists of Rock and Roll list. In addition to his achievements in music, Young has contributed to a variety of charities and philanthropic organizations which serve to assist local farming and environmental issues. He has also directed a variety of films under a pseudonym, Bernard Shakey. Neil Young continues to write, perform, and tour.
