Mark Farner was born in 1948 in Michigan and began his music career when he was in his early twenties, initially playing with Terry Knight and the Pack. After performing with a few other bands, Farner formed Grand Funk Railroad in 1968 and served as their guitarist and singer. Mark Farner’s work with Grand Funk Railroad is best captured in his contributions to their hits, the best-known of which is “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” but also includes the originals and adaptations: "Bad Time," "Footstompin' Music," "Rock & Roll Soul," "The Loco-Motion,” "Some Kind of Wonderful," "Hooked on Love," "Mean Mistreater," "Heartbreaker," "Gimme Shelter,” "Feelin' Allright."
Grand Funk Railroad disbanded in 1976 and Mark Farner embarked on a solo career, releasing his self-titled debut in 1977. No Frills followed in 1978, and three years later, Mark Farner re-teamed with Don Brewer to re-launch another lineup of Grand Funk Railroad. The newly formed version of the band released Grand Funk Lives and What’s Funk? before Mark Farner again released the solo album Just Another Injustice. Some Kind of Wonderful followed in 1991, and in the mid-1990’s, Mark Farner toured with Ringo Starr’s Allstars alongside such notables as Billy Preston, John Entwistle, and Randy Bachman.
Today, Mark Farner continues to perform and record with his own band, N’rG, which focuses more on the Christian music genre. As of late 2017, Farner was on tour with Jefferson Airplane, performing a number of show dates throughout the country.
