Rush Song List
The band Rush came together in 1968, when Toronto, Ontario residents Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart joined forces. They eventually replaced Peart with John Rutsey in 1974, just before releasing their self-titled debut. Rush’s follow-up albums, Fly by Night and Caress of Steel, both released in 1975, helped further pave the way for future success, but it was 1976’s album 2112 which proved to be the band’s breakthrough.
The album 2112 became the first of many for Rush to go gold and platinum: ??A Farewell to Kings (1977), Hemispheres (1978), Permanent Waves (1980), Moving Pictures (1981), Signals (1982), Grace Under Pressure (1984), Power Windows (1985), Hold Your Fire (1987), Presto (1989), Roll the Bones (1991), Counterparts (1993), and Test for Echo (1996), featuring iconic hits such as “Tom Sawyer” and “New World Man.” A hiatus in the new millennium made Rush fans slightly nervous, but they returned with their seventeenth studio album in 2002, Vapor Trails, and then Snakes & Arrows in 2007. The latter spawned the singles “Spindrift” and “The Larger Bowl,” which reached into the Top 20 on the charts.
A supporting worldwide tour followed in 2007 and 2008, taking Rush throughout North America into Europe, and the live performances in the Netherlands were filmed and released on DVD. Rush even performed “Tom Sawyer” on the Colbert Report in 2008, right alongside Stephen Colbert himself. In 2009, Rush returned to the studio again, and began plays for not only a new album, but also additional tours in 2010 and 2011. The Time Machine Tour launched as promised, and the fall of 2011 also saw the release of the DVD Time Machine 2011: Live in Cleveland. The release of Clockwork Angels followed in 2012, launching another tour.
In total, Rush has sold an estimated forty million albums worldwide and earned twenty-four gold and fourteen platinum records, placing them just behind the Rolling Stones and the Beatles for the greatest number of consecutive records at gold or platinum status. Rush was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Although Rush has recently announced that they will not tour quite as frequently as they have in the past, the group does continue to perform and record occasionally. Rush released a 40th anniversary box set, R40, in 2014, and two years later, announced their latest documentary, Time Stand Still.
