Cristela Alonzo Biography

Cristela Alonzo is an American comedian and actress born in 1979. She was born and raised in San Juan, Texas, and grew up in poverty with her mother and siblings. Alonzo would use comedy as an escape from the conditions of her environment, and she often watched a lot of television to learn English. She would eventually attend Webster University before moving back to Dallas.
    
Cristela Alonzo would be offered her first career opportunity in 2003 as an office manager at a local improv theatre. Within a couple of years, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue comedy full-time and was hired by Comedy Central as a writer in 2006. She would appear on numerous late-night television programs to do her own standup sets, and would breakthrough with the starring role in the TV show Cristela from 2013 to 2015.

Cristela Alonzo was given the key to the city for McAllen, Texas in 2019 for her career. She has starred on numerous television programs including Cristela and General Hospital, among others. She would also go on to star in feature films like The Angry Birds Movie and Cars 3 while having her standup comedy special on Netflix in 2017.

Cristela Alonzo recently starred as a recurring character on His Dark Materials and published her first book entitled Music to My Years: A Mixtape-Memoir of Growing Up and Standing Up.
