David Cross was born in 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was only a teenager when he began performing stand-up around town, and after graduating from high school, Cross left immediately for New York to try and make it in the entertainment business. He eventually found himself in Boston, and between the mid 1980’s and early 1990’s, and began performing at Catch a Rising Star several nights a week.
Ultimately, David Cross’s big break came when he was offered a job as a writer on the Ben Stiller Show. Although the show was short-lived, it opened doors for him and even earned him an Emmy for writing in 1993. A role as Tobias on the breakthrough series Arrested Development followed, and then smaller roles on a number of notable shows – including Just Shoot Me!, NewsRadio, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force – followed. He has also appeared on The Colbert Report as the title figure’s nemesis, Russ Lieber.
David Cross’s one-hour comedy special on HBO helped to expand his opportunities even further. He has appeared in a number of films, including The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996), Waiting for Guffman (1996), The Thin Pink Line (1998), Chain of Fools (2000), Pootie Tang (2001), Scary Movie 2 (2001), Run Ronnie Run (2002), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), School fr Scoundrels (2006), I’m Not There (2007), Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007), Year One (2009), and Demoted (2011.)
His recording, Shut Up You Fucking Baby! Was nominated for a Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 2004, and he ranks on Comedy Central’s List of 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time. Although most frequently associated with his Tobias character from Arrested Development, David Cross has recently participated in a number of projects, including The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (for the UK channel 4 and IFC in the United States); I Drink for a Reason, his 2009 book release; and a live performance at the ATP New York 2009 festival.
