The magical duo Penn & Teller was established in the late 1970’s, forming an act that has grown to become a unique blend of comedy, modern-day “illusions,” and traditional magic. Teller, who goes by one singular name and serves as the duo’s “silent” half, communicates through mostly nonverbal signals and mime-like gestures, while Penn Jillette serves as storyteller and presenter for the duo’s acts.
The duo came together to perform their first show in the mid 1970’s, initially as part of a trio which included Wier Chrisimer. They remained as a trio until the early 1980’s, at which time Chrisimer left the team. But by the early 1990’s, Penn & Teller had grown to establish not only their own following for their live performances, but they’d also become highly recognizable for their frequent television appearances on various specials and late night shows, such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Saturday Night Live, and Late Night with David Letterman. The duo even earned an Emmy Award for Penn & Teller Go Public, which aired on the PBS network.
Throughout the 1990’s, Penn & Teller continued to rise in popularity, appearing on dozens of television shows, including many sitcoms, and in the new millennium they are one of the most popular acts on both the stage and the small screen. The duo launched their own television show, Bullshit!, which provides a skeptical lens through which to explore the paranormal, conspiracy theories, and even religion. The duo’s books, including Penn & Teller’s Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends, often appear on the best seller lists, and since 2001 the team has appeared in live performances at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Today, Penn & Teller can also be seen on the Discovery Channel’s show Penn & Teller Tell a Lie, which aired for the first time in 2011. The duo is also known for their political and social advocacy; they are supporters of libertarianism and atheism.
