The American folk singer and songwriter John Prine was born in 1946 in Maywood, Illinois. John learned to play the guitar as a young teenager, and although he entered the military as a young man, serving during the Vietnam War period, he continued to play and write music throughout his service and after his return. A chance meeting with Kris Kristofferson led to Prine’s entry into the world of music performance in the early 1970’s, and the rest – as they say – is history.
Prine signed with Atlantic Records and released his debut album, John Prine, in 1971. The album brought John significant praise and earned him comparisons to such notable musicians as Bob Dylan. Since that time, Prine has released dozens of albums for a strong fan base, including the albums: Common Sense (1975), Bruised Orange (1978), Storm Windows (1980), Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings (1995), In Person & On Stage (2010), Singing Mailman Delivers (2011), and Fair & Square (2005), which earned John Prine an Americana Music Award for Artist of the Year. Collectively, Prine’s albums have given audiences notable singles such as: “Souvenirs,” “Dear Abby,” “Grandpa Was A Carpenter,” The Hobo Song,” and “In Spite of Ourselves,” which appears in the closing credits for the Billy Bob Thornton film, Daddy & Them. John Prine also appears in a supporting role in the film.
In recent years, John Prine has picked up a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album, for Beautiful Dreamer (2004), which features a cover version of the song “My Old Kentucky Home.” He was also the subject of a tribute album, Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows: The Songs of John Prine (2010), which includes contributions from such notable performers as: Justin Townes Earle, Old Crow Medicine Show, Josh Ritter, and The Avett Brothers.
