Kris Kristofferson was born in 1936 in Brownsville, Texas. Kris grew up in a military household, moving from place to place for much of his formative youth. Originally, Kris had aspirations to become a writer, and he excelled at academics, even earning a coveted Rhodes Scholarship to England’s prestigious Oxford University. It was during his stay at Oxford that he began experimenting with songwriting, although it would be another few years before he would pursue a career as a performer.
After earning his degree in English literature, Kristofferson enrolled in the military. While serving his tour of duty, Kris formed his first band and finally decided to pursue music after leaving the Army. Kristofferson moved to Nashville and began to seek any and all opportunity to have his music heard. Finally, Monument Records took notice of Kris Kristofferson’s talent and signed him as an artist, releasing his debut Kristofferson in 1970. The album initially fared poorly, although a number of Kris’s other compositions were highly successful for other artists (including “Come Sundown,” Bobby Bare; “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” Johnny Cash; “Help Me Make it Through the Night,” Sammi Smith.)
Kristofferson’s big breakthrough finally came with his sophomore effort, The Silver Tongued Devil and I (1971.) The album was a success, and launched a career which would last well into the new millennium, with such notable hit country albums as: Jesus Was a Capricorn (1972), To the Bone (1981), Repossessed (1986), The Austin Sessions (1999), and Closer to the Bone (2009.) The album spawned such country hits as “Why Me,” but Kristofferson soon launched an acting career that would match or even eclipse his success as a musician.
Kris Kristofferson’s first notable performance was as the lead in A Star is Born in 1976, alongside Barbra Streisand. The role earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor and made him a coveted film star. Since that time, Kris Kristofferson has appeared in a staggering number of film, with his most notable appearances in: Songwriter (1984), Stagecoach (1986), Blood & Orchids (1986), Amerika (1987), Millennium (1989), Paper Hearts (1993), Lone Star (1996), Blue Rodeo (1996), Blade (1998), Payback (1999), Planet of the Apes (2001), Blade II (2002), Lives of the Saints (2004), Gun (2005), He’s Just Not That Into You (2009), Bloodworth (2010), Dolphin Tale (2011), and When Angels Sing (2013.)
Kris Kristofferson was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. He most recently released his latest album, Feeling Mortal, in 2013.
