Gwen McCrae Biography
American singer Gwen McCrae was born in 1943 in Pensacola, Florida. McCrae rose to prominence in the mid 1970’s for such hits as “Rockin’ Chair,” but long before that she grew up singing in local clubs and bars as a teenager. In the early 1960’s, Gwen was offered her first solo recording deal, and she debuted on the music scene with the song “Lead Me On,” a cover of the Bobby Bland song.
Since that time, Gwen McCrae has released more than a dozen albums, spanning five decades and giving audiences such hits as: “Rockin’ Chair” (1975), “Love Insurance” (1975), “Funky Sensation” (1981), “Do You Know What I Mean?” (1984.) McCrae had a renewed burst of popularity at the turn of the new millennium, when the electronic duo Cassius used tracks from her song “All This Love That I’m Giving” in their song ‘Feeling for You.” The track rose into the top twenty in the United Kingdom, and later in the same year, DJ Thomilla featuring Afrob sampled her song “Funky Sensation” in the German hit “Get Up.”
In the new millennium, Gwen McCrae teamed up with Soulpower, an organization which oversees comeback careers for notable R&B and gospel singers. Since 2005, Gwen McCrae has performed dozens of times throughout the world and released some new material, including the single “Now I Found Love,” which arrived in 2010.
