DJ Shadow Biography

The music producer and artist known as DJ Shadow was born Joshua Paul Davis in 1972 in California. While attending UC Davis, DJ Shadow began working as a disc jockey for a college station and experimenting with his own DJ-ing skills and remixes. In the early 1990’s, DJ Shadow’s work was released on a subsidiary of Hollywood Records, although the label eventually folded and he would steer his attention to other outlets for his music.

 

DJ Shadow released Endtroducing…, his debut, in 1996. The album was a breakthrough for an unusual reason; it was among the earliest full-length album consisting of one hundred percent sampled music, giving DJ Shadow a non in the Guinness Book of World Records for the achievement. The album went on to become legendary and launched a career for DJ Shadow which has since spanned well into the new millennium. The album was followed by Preemptive Strike (1998), The Private Press (2002), The Outsider (2006), and The Less You Know, the Better (2011.)

 

In addition to his own music, DJ Shadow has also provided the score for Dark Days, a highly successful art film released in 2000. DJ Shadow continues to perform and mix, and has plans for albums and collections for the coming years.
