Laufey Biography

Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir, professionally known as Laufey (pronounced l?y-v?y), was born on April 23, 1999, in Reykjavík, Iceland. She has an Icelandic father and a Chinese mother from Guangzhou, who is a classical violinist. Laufey's musical background was influenced by her family’s rich artistic heritage; her maternal grandfather was a violin educator at the Central Conservatory of Music in China. Laufey has an identical twin sister, Júnía Lín Jónsdóttir, who is a violinist and serves as her creative director.Laufey began her formal music education at a young age, learning the piano at four and the cello at eight. By the age of 15, she was a cello soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. She gained public recognition as a finalist in the 2014 edition of Ísland Got Talent (Iceland's Got Talent) and later became a semi-finalist on The Voice Iceland. After graduating from the Reykjavík College of Music in 2018, Laufey attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she graduated in 2021.On April 6, 2020, Laufey released her debut single, "Street by Street," which topped Icelandic Radio charts. This success was followed by her debut EP, Typical of Me, released on April 30, 2021. The EP garnered significant attention and received praise from critics and listeners alike. In 2022, she hosted a weekly music show on BBC Radio 3 and collaborated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, further cementing her presence in the music industry.Laufey made her U.S. network television debut as a musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on January 21, 2022, where she performed "Like the Movies." Her first full-length album, Everything I Know About Love, was released on August 26, 2022, and achieved commercial success, debuting at number one on Billboard’s Alternative New Artist Album chart. In September 2023, Laufey released her second album, Bewitched. This album received critical acclaim and won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in 2024. The album's single "From the Start" also achieved moderate chart success in several countries.In August 2023, Laufey signed a global publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music. Additionally, in 2024, she was nominated for the "Push Performance Of The Year" by the MTV Video Music Awards.
