AZ Biography

The rapper known as AZ was born Anthony Cruz in 1972 in Brooklyn. AZ rose to fame first with his appearance on the Nas album Illmatic in 1994, providing vocals for the song “Life’s a Bitch.” His work with Nas led to his first recording contract, which launched his career as an artist in 1995.

 

AZ’s debut album, Doe or Die, was released later that same year and was performed well both critically and commercially, rising to the number one spot on the R&B charts and into the top twenty on the mainstream charts. The album spawned the singles “Sugar Hill,” “Doe or Die,” “Gimme Your’s,” and “Mo Money, Mo Murder, Mo Homicide.” Multiple albums have followed since, including: Pieces of a Man (1998), 9 Lives (2001), Aziatic (2002), A.W.O.L. (2005), The Format (2006), Undeniable (2008), and Legendary (2009.)
