The Jamaican-American rap artist Canibus was born Germaine Williams in 1974. Young Germaine was born in Kingston, but his family relocated frequently throughout his life, bringing him to such cities as London, Miami, Atlanta, and New York City. Initially after graduating from high school, Germaine went on to study computer science while living in Atlanta, but around the same time he began experimenting with rap and considering the pursuit of the art as his goal.
By the mid 1990’s, Germaine had adopted the moniker Canibus and began performing around the country and competing in rap competitions. His debut album, Can-I-Bus, was released in 1998 and was bolstered by the strength of the song “Second Round K.O.” The album rose to gold status but did not garner critical acclaim, although the follow-ups 2000 B.C. (2000) and C! True Hollywood Stories (2001) fared better.
Since that time, Canibus has released a number of successful albums, including: Mic Club: The Curriculum (2002), Rip the Jacker (2003), Mind Control (2005), Hip-Hop for Sale (2005), and For Whom the Beat Tolls (2007), although his releases in the past few years have not fared as well. Nevertheless, Canibus released Fait Accompli in 2014 and has returned to the studio for work on Rip the Jacker II: Infinity, scheduled for release in the next year.
In addition to his own work, Canibus has collaborated with a number of other musicians, including: Killah Priest (on The Horsemen Project, 2003); Keith Murray (on Canibus & Keith Murray are the Undergods, 2009); Webb (on Lyrical Warfare, 2011); and Bronza Nazareth (on The 2nd Coming, 2013, which also features Cappadonna, Planet Asia, and M-Eighty.)
