Funkdoobiest Biography

The American rap group known as Funkdoobiest was established in Los Angeles, California in the early 1990’s, by founding members Sioux MC Tomahawk Funk (Tyrone Pachenco), DJ Ralph M (Ralph Medrano), and Son Doobie (Jason Vasquez.) All members of Funkdoobiest were protégés of producer DJ Muggs, and so it was no surprise that he would produce the group’s first two albums.

 

Funkdoobiest quickly became known for a unique style of Latin hip-hop, and after signing with Immortal/Epic, burst onto the music scene with the release of their 1993 album, Which Doobie U B? The album was a surprise hit, rising to gold status, largely on the strength of the hit singles: “ Bow Wow Wow,” “Wopbabalubop,” “The Funkiest,” and “Freak Mode.”

 

Funkdoobiest followed Which Doobie U B? with the album Brothas Doobie (1995), which was not quite as successful as Funkdoobiest’s debut. During this time, Tomahawk Funk left the group, but DJ Ralph M and Son Doobie forged forward as a duo, recording and releasing The Troubleshooters in 1998. This time, the duo produced the album without the support of DJ Muggs, and the result was a newer sound with stronger Latin influences, giving audiences the songs like “Papi Chulo.” Additional hits from these two albums include: “Dedicated,” “Rock On,” “XXX Funk,” “Hip Hop Music,” and “The Heavyweight Funk.”

 

Funkdoobiest continues to perform and record, although both DJ Ralph M and Son Doobie have gone on to collaborate with other artists on other projects as well. The group released its latest album, The Golden B-Boys, in 2011.
