The American rapper known as Gucci Mane was born Radric Delantic Davis in 1980 in Birmingham, Alabama, and spent his formative years growing up in Atlanta. Davis was influenced by the rap culture of the Atlanta area, and so he began writing and performing his own raps by the time he was a teenager. After a period of self-distributing CDs recorded as Gucci Mane, Davis moved to New York in pursuit of a record deal.
A chance meeting with the head of Big Cat Records led to some support for Gucci Mane; he was able to record and release the songs “Black Tee” and “So Icy,” garnering the attention of Tommy Boy Records. With the support of Tommy Boy, Gucci Mane entered the studio to record his debut album, Trap House, which arrived in 2005. The album featured the single “Icy,” recorded with Young Jeezy & Boo, which into the top forty on the rap and R&B charts in the United States.
Trap House set the stage for nearly a dozen albums which have followed, including: Hard to Kill (2006), Trap-A-Thon (2007), Back to the Trap House (2007), Murder Was the Case (2009), The State vs. Radric Davis (2009), The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted (2010), and The Return of Mr. Zone 6 (2011.) The albums spawned the additional top twenty rap hits: “Freaky Gurl,” “Wasted,” “Spotlight,” “Lemonade,” and “Gucci Time.”
Between 2011 and 2016, Gucci Mane did not release any new material, largely due to an incarceration period, but in 2016 he resurfaced with the album and mixtapes: Everybody Looking, Woptober, and The Return of East Atlanta Santa. Also in 2016, Gucci Mane scored a number of chart-topping rap hits, including “Back on Road” (recorded with Drake) and the collaboration “Champions” (recorded with a number of other artists, including: Kanye West, Big Sean, and Yo Gotti.)
