Spinderella Biography

The DJ and rapper known as Spinderella was born Deidra Muriel Roper in 1971. Spinderella rose to fame as the DJ for the 1980’s group Salt-n-Pepa, but in recent years she has also become well-known as a radio personality and as a DJ for other artists.

 

Roper teamed up with Salt-n-Pepa when they were already a duo on the rise in 1986. The group’s original DJ was about to leave Salt-n-Pepa and so they were looking for a replacement. Roper adopted the moniker Spinderella and joined the duo to serve as their DJ, eventually making Salt-n-Pepa essentially a trio. Ultimately, Spinderella helped to bring the group to the height of their success, making them one of the most successful female acts of all time, particularly in the hip-hop genre.

 

With Salt-n-Pepa, Spinderella released multiple hits and five albums, many of them rising to platinum and multi-platinum status. Notable singles include, “Whatta Man” and “Push It,” which has gone on to become a classic hit and heard still today in commercials, film, and television. Although the group dissolved shortly after the turn of the new millennium, Spinderella went on to work as a radio DJ in California and then later in Texas.

 

Salt-n-Pepa briefly reunited in 2007 and Spinderella performed with them at that time. Today, Spinderella still makes occasional appearances and serves as a DJ for special occasions.
