D.R.A.M. Biography

The American rapper, songwriter, and performer known as D.R.A.M. was born Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith in 1988 in West Germany while his mother was serving in the military. As an infant, D.R.A.M. moved to back the United States when his mother was relocated, settling in Virginia where he spent his formative years growing up in Hampton.

In 2015, D.R.A.M. signed with Atlantic Records and released his debut EP, #1Epic. The EP didn’t chart, but it set the stage for the artist’s debut album, Big Baby DRAM, which was an enormous success. Rising into the top twenty on the mainstream charts in the United States and into the top ten on the Rap/R&B/HH charts, Big Baby DRAM featured the number one rap single “Broccoli,” featuring Lil Yachty. Additional singles by the artist include: “Cut,” “Cash Machine,” “Gilligan,” “The Uber Song,” “Crumbs,” and “The Lay Down,” but it was “Broccoli” that earned D.R.A.M. a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Performance and set the stage for a career which is now on the rise.

In addition to his own singles, D.R.A.M. has appeared on a number of songs by others as a featured artist, including: “Andromeda” (with Gorillaz); “Count Up” (with Smokepurpp); “Suavecito” (with Yung Gravy); and “It Gets Better” (with GRiZ.) D.R.A.M. also appears on the hip-hop hit “Cash Out,” a collaboration with Calvin Harris, Schoolboy Q, and PartyNextDoor.
