Malcolm Jamaal Davis, known by his stage name "MadeinTYO" (pronounced "Made in Tokyo"), is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter born on April 12, 1992, in Honolulu, Hawaii. As a military brat, Davis moved frequently throughout his childhood, living in various locations including California, Texas, New York, and Virginia before spending his teenage years in Tokyo, Japan. His experiences across these diverse locales significantly influenced his musical style and artistic identity.Davis became inspired to pursue music after observing a cousin produce songs while they lived in Washington, D.C. This early exposure prompted him to begin writing his own music. After returning from a trip to Tokyo, he settled in Atlanta with his older brother, 24hrs, where he continued to develop his craft. MadeinTYO achieved widespread recognition with his debut single "Uber Everywhere," released on February 26, 2016. The track peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified double platinum by the RIAA. The remix featured the prominent rapper Travis Scott, further boosting its success. Following “Uber Everywhere,” he released several singles, including "I Want" featuring 2 Chainz and "Skateboard P," both of which received gold and platinum certifications.In April 2016, MadeinTYO released his debut mixtape, "You Are Forgiven", which was commercially available on iTunes by August. The project peaked at number 122 on the Billboard 200 and showcased his growing popularity, as Business Insider noted that he was among the top five most streamed new artists of 2016 on Spotify. He also released two EPs, "24Hrs in Tokyo" and "True's World", in 2016 and 2017, respectively.He was selected for the "XXL Freshman Class" in 2017, alongside notable artists such as "A Boogie wit da Hoodie" and " Playboi Carti". On June 1, 2018, he released the single "Ned Flanders" featuring "ASAP Ferg", which served as the lead single for his debut studio album, "Sincerely, Tokyo", released on October 26, 2018. After the release of his second studio album, "Never Forgotten", on October 30, 2020, and a collaborative album with UnoTheActivist titled "Yokohama" in 2021, MadeinTYO continued to make waves in the industry. In 2023, he released his third studio album, "NEO TYO", featuring collaborations with various artists, including Famous Dex. The following year, he released "TYO 808", a collection of 18 tracks that showcased his artistic evolution.
