The Fugees, a trailblazing trio from South Orange, New Jersey, masterfully fused jazz-rap, R&B, and reggae to achieve extraordinary success in the mid-'90s. Their sophomore album, "The Score," catapulted them to stardom, claiming the number one spot on the pop charts and selling over five million copies. The album's monumental impact was cemented with a pair of Grammy Awards in 1997. "Killing Me Softly" and "Ready or Not" were just two of the unforgettable tracks that solidified "The Score" as a '90s classic. In the years that followed, each member embarked on their respective solo careers, which continued well into the 2000s.
 
The journey of this remarkable trio began in the late '80s when high school friends Lauryn Hill and Prakazrel Michel, known as "Pras," began collaborating. Wyclef Jean, Michel's cousin, soon joined the fold, and together, they formed the Tranzlator Crew. Under the name Fugees (derived from "refugees," a term once used to describe Haitian immigrants), they inked a deal with Ruffhouse/Columbia in 1993. Their debut full-length, "Blunted on Reality," emerged in early 1994, showcasing a beat-driven hip-hop crew vibe reminiscent of acts like A Tribe Called Quest, Poor Righteous Teachers, and Digable Planets. Though an underground favorite, the album didn't achieve significant chart success, but it laid the foundation for their next venture.
 
"The Score" arrived in 1996 and quickly became a sensation. The album retained elements of their earlier jazz-rap influences while introducing traditional R&B, spotlighting Lauryn Hill's remarkable vocal talents. With chart-toppers like "Killing Me Softly" and a top 40 rendition of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry," "The Score" conquered charts worldwide, achieving multi-platinum status in Europe and the U.S. Their album became one of the surprise hits of 1996, earning them Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album and Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for "Killing Me Softly."
 
After the triumph of "The Score," the Fugees embarked on a hiatus, during which each member pursued individual projects that eventually led to a permanent break. Wyclef Jean released his solo debut, "The Carnival Featuring the Refugee Allstars," in 1997, while Prakazrel Michel collaborated with Mya and Ol' Dirty Bastard on the hit single "Ghetto Superstar (That Is What You Are)." In 1998, Lauryn Hill released "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," a neo-soul masterpiece that topped charts and outsold "The Score," earning her five Grammy Awards in 1999.

In 2005, almost a decade after their heyday, the Fugees briefly reunited for a European tour and released the single "Take It Easy." However, the reunion was short-lived, and the trio disbanded once more. Despite their relatively brief time together, "The Score" endures as one of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time, and each Fugee continued to make significant contributions to the world of music and politics in the decades that followed.
