Vance Joy Biography
The Australian singer-songwriter known as Vance Joy was born James Gabriel Keough in 1987. Keough did not always harbor dreams of becoming a musician; his first love was football, which he played for the Coburg Football Club in the late 2000’s. After graduating from Monash University as a dual major (a B.A. in Arts and a B.A. in Law), James surprised decided to try and pursue a career as a singer-songwriter.
After adopting the moniker Vance Joy, Keough released his debut single in 2013. The song, “From Afar,” preceded his debut EP, God Loves You When You’re Dancing. But it was the EP’s first single, “Riptide,” that became an instant international success; the song received a major boost in the United States after it was featured in a GoPro advertising campaign on American network television. “Riptide” charted internationally, reaching into the top ten in multiple countries, and reaching the number thirty spot on the mainstream charts in the United States.
God Loves you When You’re Dancing was followed by Vance’s debut album, Dream Your Life Away, which fared even better, rising to the number one spot in Australia and into the top twenty internationally, including reaching to the number seventeen spot in the United States. The album earned Vance Joy six nominations at the ARIA Music Awards of 2015, including one win for Best Male Artist.
Clearly, Vance Joy is an artist on the rise and one to watch in the coming years. His latest single, “Straight into Your Arms,” was released in 2016. Vance Joy is currently preparing for another studio album and a possible tour in the coming year.
