The XX Biography

The English pop band known as The XX was established in London in 2005, by founding members Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft. Both young men met while still in high school, and they began to write music and perform together. A series of demos on the duo’s MySpace page eventually caught the attention of label Young Turks, which took The XX under its wing and helped get the group off the ground.

After rounding out the initial lineup, The XX entered the studio and released a self-titled debut album in 2009. With its unique blend of electro-pop and rock and soft, echoed guitar riffs, the album was a top ten hit in the UK, earning praise from notable publications such as The Guardian. But it was The XX’s second album, Coexist (2012), which became the group’s big international breakthrough, reaching into the top five in the United States and spawning the top forty hit “Angels.”

Since that time, The XX has released the second album I See You, which was an even bigger hit upon its release in 2017, rising to the number one spot in five countries and reaching the number two spot in the United States. With the current lineup of Sim, Croft, and Jamie xx (on beats and MPC), The XX has just wrapped their third extensive tour; the group has plans to re-enter the studio and prepare for their breakthrough follow-up.
