The New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band was established in the late 1970’s by founding member Benny Jones. The band actually began as a youth music program via a local Baptist church, but after the band was met with considerable local success, it grew to become one of the country’s most respected and recognized brass bands.
Dirty Dozen Brass Band started its career with weekly performances in New Orleans’ Seventh Ward area, at a neighborhood club called Daryl’s. Local promoters and radio stations began to take notice of the band’s increasing popularity. In the mid 1980’s, Dirty Dozen Brass Band appeared in its first international performances in Europe, followed by multiple show dates throughout the United States. Dirty Dozen Brass Band signed with Columbia Records in 1987, and the group’s first major-label debut, Voodoo, arrived in 1987.
Voodoo featured some of the industry’s most impressive guest artists, including Dr. John and Dizzy Gillespie. Since the debut, subsequent albums by Dirty Dozen Brass Band have included notable guests artists such as Norah Jones and Elvis Costello, and the trend has become a staple for the band when it enters the studio to record.
Today, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band continues to perform and record with the lineup of Gregory Davis, Roger Lewis, Kevin Harris, Terence Higgins, Jake Eckert, Efrem Towns, and Kirk Joseph. The band most recently appeared on Goin’ Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino, and collaborated with Modest Mouse on the album No One’s First and You’re Next.
