Earl Klugh was born in 1952 in Detroit, Michigan. Klugh became enamored with blues guitar when he was still a child, and by the time he was in his mid-teens, he’d begun contributing tracks to such notable artists as George Benson, Yusef Lateef, and Chet Atkins, the latter of whom influenced young Earl greatly as a musician. Klugh’s talents quickly brought him to the forefront of blues and jazz, and he is considered among the greatest acoustic guitar players of this era.
Following his debut album, Early Klugh (1976), Klugh released more than a dozen albums, including: Finger Paintings (1977); Heart String (1979); the Grammy nominated album Dream Come True (1980); Low Ride (1983); Life Stories (1986); Solo Guitar (1989); the Grammy nominated Whispers and Promises (1989); Move (1994); The Journey (1997); and most recently, the Grammy nominated albums Naked Guitar (2005) and The Spice of Life (2008.) In addition, Earl Klugh has given audiences a number of collaborative albums, including his critically acclaimed albums alongside Bob James (One on One, Two of a Kind, and Cool.) Earl has also contributed music to the soundtracks for the films How to Beat the High Cost of Living (1980), Marvin and Tige (1983), and Just Between Friends (1992.)
Thus far in his career, Earl Klugh’s albums, in excess of thirty, have received a total of twelve Grammy nominations and five have hit the number one spot on the jazz charts. Earl Klugh still hosts his annual Weekend of Jazz in Colorado Springs, bringing together some of the best in the genre for memorable live performances. Klugh continues to record and perform regularly.
