The American jazz pianist Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr. was born in 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Ellis was raised in a large family of six children, nearly all of whom grew up to become jazz musicians. Maraslis began playing while still in elementary and middle school; his earliest gigs were initially as a tenor saxophonist, but while in high school he began to experiment with jazz piano and found his true calling. Performing around the New Orleans area, Ellis Marsalis quickly established a following for himself and became one of the area’s most well-respected musicians.
In the early 1990’s, Ellis Marsalis began to record and release his own albums, starting with Standard Time, Vol. 3: The Resolution of Romance. Other notable albums from Ellis include: Ellis Marsalis Trio (1991), Piano in E – Solo Piano (1991), Heart of Gold (1992), Joe Cool’s Blues (1995), Loved Ones (1996), Twelve’s It (1998), UAB Superjazz, Featuring Ellis Marsalis (2001), Marsalis Family (2002), On the First Occasion (2004), and Ruminations in New York (2005.) Marsalis has also recorded albums with Irvin Mayfield, Ed Blackwell, and Nat Adderley.
Ellis Marsalis’s legacy extends beyond his own recordings and performances; as an educator at three major universities in the New Orleans area (the Center for Creative Arts, Xavier University of Louisiana, and the University of New Orleans), Marsalis has influenced countless numbers of musicians, including Harry Connick Jr. and Terence Blanchard.
Ellis Marsalis continues to teach, perform, and record. His most recent album was released just a few years ago in 2010; Music Redeems features contributions from four of the Marsalis brothers, plus an appearance by Eric Revis on bass, Herlin Riley on drums, and Harry Connick, Jr. on piano. Ellis Marsalis can still be seen performing around New Orleans, most frequently on Friday nights at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro.
